Supermarkets

The nearest supermarket is Joker, down in Bjelland, 4 km away.

The Spar is located in Hægeland, 11 km away.

There are several supermarkets in Evje, such as Kiwi, Extra, Rema 1000, and Spar. And in the larger towns and cities, there are several more supermarkets.

Please note that most supermarkets are only open on Sundays during the summer months!

Restaurants and other eateries

There are also plenty of dining options here, of course. Although you should plan on at least a half-hour drive.

The restaurants are located in the larger places.

And by "Restaurants" I also mean coffee shops, bakeries with coffee corners and lunch places.

Norwegians are especially fond of pizza, burgers, and fish. And that's reflected in the selection of restaurants.

You often see gas stations have a fairly extensive menu with (hot) meals and a nice seating area. It can be surprisingly nice!

Evje - 36 km -- Various small restaurants

Vennesla - 36 km -- Several small restaurants, but a little more choice than in Evje

Oaks - 38 km -- Restaurant at a hotel

Mandal - 50 km -- Wide choice of different types of restaurants

Kristiansand - 49 km -- Wide choice of different types of restaurants

Kristiansand Sørlandet - 57 km -- Wide choice of different types of restaurants

Other Shops

Looking for a real day of shopping? Then head to Sørlandparken (Sørlandsenter), about 5 km from Kristiansand. There you'll find a huge indoor shopping mall. You name it, and yes...you can buy it there!

At Sørlandsparken itself, you'll find everything you could possibly want: a large pet store, kitchen and bathroom stores, a new car of every make you could imagine, various hardware stores, and car and boat parts. Really...it's all there.

The city of Kristiansand itself and Mandal also have plenty to offer, of course. A variety of shops and terraces.

In Mandal there are several terraces by the water, on a kind of deck, where you can sit in the summer.

The biggest (and they say the tastiest) ice cream (!) is also found in Mandal. Right by the waterfront, in a pink building across from the police station, there's an ice cream shop (only in the summer) with a huge variety of ice cream scoops. Just choose one scoop and ask for two scoops, because it's a real meal! And incredibly delicious! And while you're there, you have to try it!

But of course you can also go to shops closer to home.

In Evje you will find a few things, but Vennesla is just a little bit bigger and has more to offer.

For thrift stores, it's best to Google them. There are tons, but since their opening hours and days change regularly, I can't say much about them.

Activities in the Area

Of course, going on holiday doesn't just mean sitting still.

And that's a good thing, because there is so much to do in the area.

In winter you will find several ski areas within a short hour's drive (Bortelid, Ljosland, Eikerapen).

But of course, you can also enjoy wonderful walks in the area, find beautiful spots by the water for fishing, or spend a day shopping in a large indoor shopping mall. It's all possible.

But...there are also tons of "real" activities to do. Take a look here at what's on offer and be amazed by the sheer variety!

Wildlife around Huset Alcamaro

From Huset Alcamaro you can look out over the meadow where wild animals can regularly be seen.

In winter, they usually hide in the woods. As soon as the snow begins to melt and spring arrives, they return to the open fields to graze. Roe deer, deer, and even elk are regularly seen here.

An estimated fifteen moose live in the immediate vicinity. One female has established a regular routine: almost every evening she comes to graze in the meadow in front of the apartment. You can also spot her in the early morning. A male also regularly walks by—it's wonderful to see how his antlers grow throughout the year.

In spring, a pair of cranes also arrives. These impressive birds, with their characteristic call, stay for a few days, then disappear for a few weeks, often returning around July/August.

The garden and its surroundings are also a vibrant haven for bird lovers. Here you'll see sparrows, tits, various species of finches, jays, magpies, and woodpeckers, as well as many other small songbirds.

Golden eagles regularly fly overhead or perch in the forest on the other side. An impressive sight.

We recommend taking a short drive along the smaller roads in the area at dusk. You're likely to encounter various animals along the way.

With a bit of luck you can also spot beavers, ospreys, foxes, badgers, snakes (including adders), lynxes, martens and wolverines in the area.
